Beyond the Keyboard: 4 Ways to Make a Difference This Election

The photo illustration is from the day I announced a run for office after serving the previous eight years. My family joined me that day. Who’s next?

As Election Day approaches on Tuesday, November 5th, many people are venting their frustrations about national, state, and local politics on social media. It’s common to see heated debates, complaints, and accusations aimed at politicians and the government. However, real change doesn’t come from being a keyboard warrior—it comes from taking action.

Four Ways to Get Involved

If you truly care about the direction of this country, there are four key ways to make an impact: run for office, write a check, volunteer, or vote. These are not just ideas—they are actions that can create change. Whether you're upset with decisions at the national level or concerned about local leadership, you have the power to influence those outcomes.

For those who feel particularly passionate, why not consider running for office? National and state elections may feel out of reach, but local positions are a great place to start. And filing isn’t as difficult as you might think—sometimes, it only takes a small fee and the courage to put your name on the ballot. If the cost is holding you back, I’ve got $10 in my wallet right now and would happily loan it to you.

Next year you could run for Kinston City Council or Mayor. What say you?

Be the Change You Want to See

For those not interested in running for office, there are still plenty of ways to get involved. Write a check to support candidates who align with your values, volunteer for campaigns to help spread the word, and most importantly, vote.

This Election Day is your opportunity to shape the future. Real change happens when people move from complaining to participating.
