Ditch the Filters: Show the Real You

Authenticity: The Foundation of Your Personal Brand

People are tired of seeing the “perfect” version of everything. Social media is filled with curated profiles: perfect filters, angles, and lighting. But none of that matters if people can’t connect with who you really are. People crave authenticity. I’d much rather see a raw moment, like a barbecue stain on a white t-shirt, than some polished, filtered version that doesn’t show the real you.

Building a personal brand isn’t about showcasing perfection—it’s about showcasing you. It’s about letting people get to know you, flaws and all. That’s what stands out in today’s world. The more genuine you are, the more people feel like they can trust you. And in business or life, trust is the foundation of everything.

Connection Through Authenticity

What I’ve learned over the years, whether in business or during my time in public service, is that people connect with you when you’re willing to be vulnerable. When you step away from trying to appear flawless, that’s when people lean in and listen. The relationships I’ve built weren’t formed because I had the best pitch or the most polished presentation. They were built because I was willing to be open, honest, and let people see my journey—successes and mistakes alike.

Be Consistent, Be Real

Authenticity doesn’t mean chaos; it means consistency. Your personal brand should reflect who you are every day, not just when the camera’s on. I’ve made it a point to keep my social media consistent with who I am as a person—whether I’m talking about work, family, or the latest project I’m tackling. It’s not about creating a brand that’s separate from you; it’s about making sure your brand is you.

Building your personal brand starts with showing up as yourself, every time. When you do that, you’ll find people start to connect with what you’re saying because they’re connecting with who you are.
